# The TikTok Profile Banner: A Feature Still in Testing
Of all the features working through TikTok's testing pipeline right now, the profile banner generates the most confusion — and the most misleading social media posts. Let's sort out what's real.
## What the banner actually is
TikTok has a native profile banner: a wide background image displayed behind your avatar and bio, similar in spirit to a YouTube channel banner. It's a real, built-in feature — not a third-party add-on, not a filter, not something a plugin invents. The button for it ("Add background" / "Change background") exists inside the official app.
## Why you probably don't have it
The banner is gated by an internal allow list. TikTok decides account by account who gets access, and most accounts aren't on the list yet. This is the single fact that explains nearly every confused comment under banner tutorial videos.
It also explains why the usual advice fails. Updating the app doesn't help — the switch is server-side. Reinstalling doesn't help. Changing settings doesn't help. Logging out and back in doesn't help. Your account simply hasn't been switched on yet.
## How to check if your account has it
Open TikTok, go to your Profile, tap Edit profile. If your account is on the allow list, you'll see the banner/background option there. If you don't see it, you don't have it yet — and that's the end of the story for now. Keep the app updated; allow lists expand over time.
## The mod-APK claim, honestly addressed
Here's where it gets murky. Social media is full of posts claiming a modded TikTok APK "unlocks" the banner. There is a tiny kernel of truth buried in this: technically inclined users discovered that on rooted devices, a module can unhide the banner button by bypassing the allow-list check. That technical curiosity got exaggerated, step by step, into "download this APK to get the banner" — and the download sites that sprang up around the claim are mostly bait.
The honest version: there is no legitimate, safe modded APK that gives you the banner. The sites offering them bundle the promise with the usual risks — malware, spyware, credential theft, and automated account bans for using modified clients. Several tell you to disable Play Protect before installing, which tells you everything about their intentions.
## Cover titles: the other feature in testing
Alongside the banner, TikTok is gradually rolling out cover titles — the ability to add titles to video covers for more accounts. Like the banner, it's reaching users in stages, so some accounts have it and most don't. Same pipeline, same patience required.
