# Inside TikTok's Feature Lab Open TikTok on two phones side by side and you might see two different apps. Your friend has a button you've never seen. A feature you used yesterday is gone today. A creator posts "NEW TikTok banner feature!!" and half the comments say they don't have it. None of this is random, and none of it means your app is broken. TikTok runs one of the largest live testing operations in tech. New features don't launch to everyone at once — they move through a pipeline of experiments, small test groups, and staged rollouts before most people ever see them. This site is a plain-English guide to that pipeline: how TikTok tests features, what's in testing right now, what you can already customize on your account, and how to tell a real announcement from a fake one. ## Why your TikTok looks different from your friend's Here's the part most people get wrong: new TikTok features usually aren't controlled by the app version on your phone. They're controlled by switches on TikTok's servers. Two people can run the exact same version of the app and see completely different features, because TikTok decides account by account who gets what. This is why "just update the app" doesn't always unlock the thing you saw in someone's video. The update gives your phone the *code* for a feature, but a server-side switch decides whether your account is allowed to *see* it. Until that switch flips for you, the feature sits dormant in the app you already have. ## How TikTok actually tests a feature TikTok's testing pipeline has a few standard moves, and once you know them, the chaos starts making sense: **Small experiments first.** A new feature goes to a tiny slice of users — sometimes under 1%. TikTok watches what happens: do people use it, does it break anything, does it change how long people stay in the app? **Percentage rollouts.** If the experiment looks good, the slice grows: 5%, then 25%, then half of all users, then everyone. Each step is a checkpoint. If something goes wrong at 25%, the rollout pauses or reverses before the other 75% ever see it. **Allow lists.** Some features are gated by an internal list of accounts rather than a percentage. If your account is on the list, you get the feature; if not, you don't — no matter how updated your app is. This is exactly what's happening with the profile banner right now. **Region gating.** Features often roll out country by country, because of language support, local regulations, or just caution. **Rollbacks.** Features can disappear after appearing. That's not a bug in your phone — TikTok pulled the feature back, usually because the test results were bad. We break down each of these testing methods with real examples in our guide to how TikTok tests new features before you ever see them. ## Features in the lab right now Two features are working their way through this pipeline as of this writing: **The profile banner.** TikTok has a native profile banner — a wide background image behind your avatar and bio, in the style of a YouTube channel banner. The code exists in the app, but it's gated by an internal allow list, so most accounts can't turn it on yet. If you don't see it under Profile → Edit profile, your account simply isn't on the list yet. **Cover titles.** A feature for adding titles to video covers is also in gradual rollout — some accounts have it, most don't. Here's what's actually happening with the TikTok profile banner, why most accounts don't have it yet, and what the social media hype gets wrong. ## What every account CAN customize today While the banner works through testing, plenty of customization is available to everyone right now, no tricks needed: **Video covers.** When you upload, tap Edit Cover: you can pick any frame of your video and add text over it. Every account has this. It's the closest thing to a banner that everyone can actually use today. **Your profile.** Photo or profile video, display name, username, bio, and (for eligible accounts) a link in bio. The full walkthrough of what you can customize on your TikTok profile today covers each of these step by step. ## A note on the name "TikLab" You might wonder about this site's name. "Tiklab" is also the name of an unrelated, years-old GitHub project — a Flutter app for downloading TikTok videos without a watermark. It has nothing to do with profile banners, it's not a banner app, and it's not affiliated with this site in any way. We chose the name for this guide's theme — a lab where TikTok features get tested. The projects just happen to share a word. ## How to spot real vs fake "new feature" announcements Social media is full of "new TikTok feature" posts, and a surprising number of them are wrong — old features presented as new, region-locked tests presented as global launches, or outright fakes designed to sell modded APKs. The quick version of telling them apart: - Check TikTok's official newsroom or creator portal first. Real launches get announced there. - See if multiple reputable tech outlets are reporting it, not just one viral video. - Check your own updated app — if nobody you know has it either, it's probably a limited test or fake. - Be deeply suspicious of any "new feature" post that includes a download link. Our full checklist for telling a real TikTok feature announcement from a fake one walks through each of these with examples. ## The one rule that matters Keep the app updated from the official stores, and be patient with the rollout pipeline. If a "new feature" requires installing a modded APK, it's not a feature — it's a risk. Modded apps can carry malware, get your account banned, and steal your login. Get TikTok from the official App Store and Google Play listings on our download page, and let the features come to you the legitimate way.

I updated TikTok three times this week and I still don't have the banner option under Edit profile. My friend has had it for a month. Is my app broken or am I missing a setting somewhere?

Not broken at all — this is the allow list thing the site talks about. TikTok switches the banner on account by account from their servers, so the app version doesn't matter. Your friend just got picked earlier. Nothing you can do except wait, unfortunately.

That actually makes sense now, thanks. I'll stop reinstalling the app every other day then. The video cover tips here helped — my grid already looks way better with consistent covers.

Someone in a Telegram group sent me a "TikTok banner unlock APK" and I almost installed it before finding this site. It told me to turn off Play Protect first, which felt wrong. Is that really as dangerous as it sounds?

You dodged a bullet — the Play Protect thing is the biggest red flag there is. Legit apps never ask you to disable your phone's security. Those APKs are how people get spyware and lose their accounts to bans. The banner will come through the normal rollout when your account gets picked.
